With the potatoes planted it is time to look at more of the plot. This afternoon I moved the large tarpaulin over to the over half which is densely covered in weeds – mostly dandelions. I don’t expect to get all of this cleared this year. I will focus on the large bed with the potatoes and the four raised beds.
One of the raised beds is full of strawberry plants and couch grass. The other three raised beds are full of weeds, including dandelions and nettles. However, I’m hoping that the raised beds will be easier to clear as they appear to have lighter compost in them, or at least two of them do.
As well as moving the large tarpaulin I also laid more weed suppressing membrane alongside the central path. I will either use this section to extend the raised beds, or possibly to plant apple trees.
Some allotment sites allow fruit trees but many don’t. You need to check what is allowed at your site. The problem is that large trees cause shade and can be an issue with neighbouring plots. I would like to have either espalier or step over apple trees. I love Discovery apples but they rarely have them at our local supermarket. I’ll need to call the council to find out what is allowed.
