Finally I have two rows of potatoes in the ground. It feels very satisfying to have my own crops in the ground within two weeks of taking over the plot. It was a very soggy morning. Lots of rain, but I was determined to get them planted.
Using the hoe I made a narrow trench across the width of the bed and planted the seed potatoes about 12 inches apart. They were well chitted now, which means they had sprouted. When planting, the shoots need to point upwards. Be careful not to break the shoots. I covered them with soil and marked the row with a bamboo cane at either end. Then repeated with a second row about 15 inches away.
It is perhaps a little later than usual to plant early potatoes, but this year is very much about seeing what can get done. We also had a long winter here, so everything is later than usual. Ideally I should have added fertiliser but I haven’t bought any yet.
